Have you seen that Liberty Mutual ad with the tagline: “Responsibility, what’s your policy?” Every time I see that ad it makes me think – and not about my insurance needs.
The ad highlights people helping people – not getting hit by a bus, getting a stroller off a bus, making certain a coffee cup doesn’t fall off a table, etc. I’m not against people helping people, and I like the premise of the commercial, but that’s not what it makes me think about when I see it.
The tagline: “Responsibility, what’s your policy?” leads my mind to wander – what ever happened to personal responsibility? There are so many lawsuits that come about because personal responsibility is gone. It’s hot coffee, did you think it wasn’t going to burn? It’s a baseball game, broken bats and foul balls happen – pay attention! And, I’m sure there are many more examples…
Why can’t people just accept responsibility for their own actions?
I try to instill this in my students, who truly should already be able to handle the result of their own actions. They are adult students – college age. I have found little problem with the older students, it’s the right-out-of-high school-student that I find has problem with accepting personal responsibility.
I’ll explore this further as the semester approaches, but I know this is going to continue to be a major sticking point. Stay tuned…

No one seems to want to take responsibility for anything! It’s always want, want, want. People want all the freedoms of the constitution, but how many of us are willing to fight for it? People want nice things, but they want to buy it on credit instead of earning the money to buy it. So many people feel entitled to things, but are not willing to pay the price.
