Who says teachers can’t learn? It’s something that every teacher must do – continue learning. Every day I teach, I learn something. Sometimes I learn new things about the topics I teach, sometimes I learn new things about my students, and I even learn new things about me.
This week I learned that I never think about the topics the same way my students do. I also learned that no matter what, a student is going to ask a question that I absolutely do not have an answer for. I also learned that patience is a virtue that I need to invest in more.
Along with patience, I learn every day that I too much keep abreast on my topics. I must research what I’m lecturing about and be prepared for the questions – and be prepared to say “I don’t know, but I will find out.” But me finding out shouldn’t be the only avenue of research. In the weeks and months to come when a student asks a questions that I do not absolutely know the answer to I will not be afraid to say “I don’t know, but how about you research that question and bring an answer back to the class.”
Learning doesn’t end in the classroom and it doesn’t end with graduation – learning continues for a lifetime.
